Open Source CMS

October 25th, 2004 by Wayne Porter

Every now and then I run into a useful resource that bears mention. My latest forays of late have been into Content Management Systems. As the choices continue to grow so does the confusion. As one who realizes that collaboration is the key to growth I think CMS is important- perhaps more so for small publishers and emerging businesses who really need to scale.

If you are into PHP/MySQL based systems have a look at opensourceCMS.com. (Note- they demo both open source and free software packages.) The interesting “twist” to this site is that you get to play administrator. Every two hours the CMS systems are reset. Within the two hour time-frame you get to play diety and kick the tires of the entire system.

A sampling include: CPG-Nuke, Exoops, eZ Publish, Mambo, PHP-Nuke and XOOPS. For those who are into exploring wikis (like me) there are even several Wiki systems you can play with too.
