Reuters, Affiliates and Online Video Marketing

January 3rd, 2006 by Valeriu Popescu

At the end of December, 2005 an interesting action was taken by the international news agency Reuters. A few people was able to discover the information and deeply understood the immediate consequences. Before I reveal the nature of the information, please let me share some thoughts.

Into a recent article, Jim invite us to share with the ReveNews readers some online prediction for 2006 . I hope he will not get upset if I post some here.

Shawn Collins was kind enough to post into his “Affiliate Program Tip Blog” my thoughts regarding the future of affiliate programs, as a response to his question “What is the Future of Affiliate Marketing?

And I make a big claim:

I believe 2006 will be the year of affiliate programs.”

If you ask me again, the answer will be the same. And I also wrote:

The battlefield will be around the idea of creating new easy-to-use promotions so affiliates will be able to use them without too much effort.”

This will lead me to the second prediction: online video marketing (or video marketing) will also thrive in 2006. Allow me to explain…

The action taken by Reuters is the proof I’m right. Reuters has made available a streaming news video player which can be integrated on any web site or blog. The video player requires no maintenance, no uploading, no software configuration and it is completely free — for the moment!

With this player, Reuters allow any website owner to integrate breaking video news clips at absolutely no cost. All of the hosting, licensing and bandwidth costs are from the “house” — aka Reuters agency.

All video clips are streamed after having been converted in Flash video, are Windows and Macintosh compatible and the steps to integrate it into your web site are really simple. The video player will be embedded in an AFFILIATE’s Web page and will not require a viewer to install software.

Video is a key part of our strategy,” said Stephen Smyth, Vice President of the media division at Reuters into a recent interview with CNET News.com. “What we want to do is offer another approach (to content distribution) and following the trends, we want to take advantage of the growing use of online video.”

During the pilot period the video player will be offered free of charge to any participating Web site, but it may contain ads,” Smyth said. “Once the service is launched commercially, sometime in the first part of 2006, affiliate sites may have the option of showing ads or paying a license fee,” he said.

What would be the next step? I guess that Reuters will finally allow web site(blog) owners to select, filter and schedule WHICH video news and topics to cover. The ability to perform such an action will become one of the most valued services of all. I’m sure this IS a new cutting-edge strategy to drive reader’s attention while providing potential new monetization opportunities for all parties involved.

Let me ask you something now: do you run an affiliate program? If your answer is yes, the above information it will worth a LOT to you!
