Charity Auctions Are Big Business on eBay

February 25th, 2005 by Sydney Johnston

These days, even churches are cashing in on the eBay craze. The Reform Chruch of Galveston, Texas, is selling banner space on its consignment shop. The banner is available March 7 through April 7, 2005.

According to the church, this is why you would want to win this auction: “Our city is one of the premier vacation sites in the USA. We need funds to continue the ministries of our Church and so, we are offering the entire side of our charitable resale shop, Angelica Resale, for advertising during the Spring Break / Easter season in Galveston, Texas, for your advertising for 30 days starting in March. Angelica Resale shop is located on Fort Crockett Boulevard which runs parallel to and is clearly visible from the famous Galveston Seawall: we are visible from the Seawall walk and the Seawall street. We have a lot of traffic daily but, as you can imagine, during Spring Break we have bumper to bumper traffic. AND WE HAVE TWO SPRING BREAKS!! We get the regular Spring break crowds but then the week after this we historically and annually also host the African American Spring Break in Galveston as well. Then there is the Easter Vacation crowd as well.

Other such auctions include tsunami relief efforts from US Weekly magazine.

Some of their ’sold’ items include:

* Eva Longoria Owned Worn Cheerleading Uniform: $1250
* Paris & Nicky Hilton Signed Pink Purse & Tank: $510
* Jen Schefft The Bachelorette Pink Gown Dress: $600
* WORN Jessica Simpson Pink Sergio Rossi Pumps: $510.50
* The Apprentice Ivana Ma Signed & Worn Bikini: $238.37
* Regis and Kelly Autographed CD & 2 T-Shirts: $455
* SpongeBob SquarePants 4′ SIGNED Plush Doll: $818.88

Personally, the main thing I learned from observing US Weekly auctions is how “out of it” I am. I don’t recognize most of the famous names in their auctions!
