Update on Paid Links Debate by Matt Cutts

Matt Cutts added an update to the paid links discussion to his old post from April this Friday.

The comments address several of the things that caused a heated debate over the last months, but still left a few things open and uncertain. I hope that Matt will be taking the time to respond to those unanswered questions, specifically the ones related to affiliate marketing.

This update was done in a much different (friendlier) tone that seems to signal that Google is willing to talk about this matter more openly to some extend than they did previously. The tendency before was that Google became more and more aggressive and started to lose touch with a lot of webmasters along the way.

It’s a beginning and we will see how it will play out at the end.
Cheers!

Carsten

Q: Are you interested in things like affiliate links? Are you interested in hearing about directories in this report?

    Matt Cutts

A: Nope, I’d be most interested in feedback like the examples that I mentioned above, or things like paid posts that might affect search engines.

“As such, I care about paid links that flow PageRank and attempt to game Google’s rankings”

And it is good he’s interacting some and answering some questions.

I am waiting for the answer to my question still.

He did not post anything new for me really, but his tone is much nicer what I consider to be a good sign.

Keep in mind that his comment on affiliate links is in the context of reporting links to Google. He also excluded paid affiliate links that do pass PageRank, a tendency that grew over the past 1-2 years as you probably noticed yourself too.

Lets see if he answers or not.
