Many free SEO keyword tools can generate thorough keyword research. This research is the foundation on which search engine marketing and optimization campaigns are built. These keywords are the driving force behind increasing traffic. Whether your goals are to sell, educate or increase inbound leads, these targeted phrases will help you reach your goals.

Identifying relevant keywords for your site can be overwhelming and time-consuming. But attracting interested and engaged visitors will help you convert prospective consumers. Poor keyword research and targeting might be the reason you’re not currently getting the results you desire.

Three Free SEO Keyword Tools to Boost Traffic

Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool is usually one of the first free SEO keyword tools internet marketers use. However, Google’s unlimited results and lack of actionable suggestions can be discouraging to marketers of all skill levels.

Although AdWords provides irreplaceable Google-centric numerical insights, these insights don’t eliminate the need for other tools.  The following free SEO keyword research tools will help you focus on quality keyword selection: WebpageFX’s CrawlerFX, the Keyword List Generator by SEOBook and the Competitors Research tool by SEMRush. These tools provide both qualitative and quantities analysis in their deliverables.

1. CrawlerFX by WebpageFX

Free SEO Keyword Tools for Research Crawler FXCrawlerFX is part of the internet marketing agency’s  SEO tools suite. It’s a web-based keyword and website analysis tool that uses spider technology. This free tool will evaluate a website paired with a keyword. It then returns a free report viewable online or through a downloadable PDF.

The report includes a variety of data points and recommendations. Results include a keyword score, Google PageRank, social media mention metrics, anchor text analysis, an image optimization breakdown and an external link examination. Each section of the report also suggests tips and tricks to improve keyword and page rankings.

This tool is comparable to many paid SEO tools. It even provides additional insight not accessible through Google Analytics. If you’re struggling with keyword performance and conversions, CrawlerFX provides the best free SEO advice.

2. Keyword List Generator by SEOBook

Free SEO Keyword Tools GeneratorThe Keyword List Generator is a quick and easy way to create long tail keywords. These less competitive keywords are highly specific. Although they will likely attract less traffic, the traffic they do generate will be of much higher quality.

The Keyword List Generator allows you to enter up to five groups of keyword terms and modifiers. The generator will then create a new list of long tail keyword phrases. These phrases can be exported to a CSV file. The CSV file can be uploaded through other tools to determine relevance for both SEO and pay per click campaigns.

For example, let’s say an internet marketer at Sweaters.com wanted to drive traffic to a new sweater’s product page. By entering several different keyword terms and modifiers, they can create a list of specific keyword phrases, like “blue medium sweater” or “red large sweatshirt.”

3. Competitors Research by SEMRush

Free SEO Keyword Tools Analysis SEM Rush Competitors ResearchSEMRush’s Competitors Research tool will show you which keywords your competitors are targeting. To get started, visit SEMRush.com and type in your competitor’s website address into the orange search box.

The search result will provide several reports and metrics available for exploration: Organic research, advertising research, backlinks and keyword research. The related keywords report under keyword research provides popular related keywords. It also returns Google data like search volume and cost per click analysis.

Examining the competitors section under organic research can also be helpful during the keyword research process. This section allows free users to view 10 related sites and their targeted keywords. Clicking on the number of SE keywords for each site will provide you with a list of their keywords used and their current ranking and internal URL.

  1. Google adwords keyword tool is best and its a free SEO tool. Very nice and it contains a lot of great information.

    • AdWords is definitely a great and essential free tool. These three
tools are a little different and I love that they all do something a
little bit different. Thanks for your comment!

  2. I agree that Google AdWords provides numerical data that is incredibly important for keyword research, although it is good to see that there are other tools that provide different insights. The one advantage I do like about Google AdWords is you can click on a keyword to search for the term right in Google to see what other sites are using the keyword and what associations that keyword has in relation to the search results on the first page.

  4. Cool list I haven’t used any of these tools before, I usually do keyword research on Google AdWords, but never spent time researching keywords targeted by competitors, I have heard of SemRush but never used it the way you describe.
