User Generated Content Generating More Revenue

A nice report on user generated content from In-Stat highlights why Google buying YouTube could be win/win for them. User generated content, such as found on MySpace and YouTube, will surpass 65 billion downloads/views in 2010, and generate $850 million dollars in revenue.

The size of downloads/views are estimated to eclipse 1.1 exabytes of data by 2010, with uploads growing to more than 9.1 petabytes.

23% of the dozens of UCG sites studied currently support mobile access, with others making announcements for this support in the near future.

YouTube holds the highest market share for video, but MySpace has the most visitors.

This report is not free, as a matter of fact the price is $3,495! Talk about increasing revenues, anyway, thought the numbers were interesting, although I do think the revenue generated will be higher, especially once Google figures out the best way to monotenize YouTube.

Am I the only one that had to look up what an exabyte and a petabyte were?

Isn’t it safe to say that Google hedged this bet pretty well? They spend $900 million for the exclusive advertising rights to Myspace. Then they spend $1.65 billion on YouTube, which was propelled to popularity because YT videos were readily embedable (made up word, please forgive) in MS profiles.

In $2.5 billion Google snapped up one of the most popular websites on the internet, and the exclusive advertising rights to another one. Next thing you know, they’ll be coming out with an online word processor and spreadsheet product to compete against microsoft! Ha! That’ll be the day.
