Revenews/Waller Wired Mention

I was excited to see Brad Waller quoted for an article he wrote on Revenews in a Wired story about online gambling today. It shows how big Revenews is getting and I am sure will drive more traffic and readers to the site.

When I worked at Commission Junction we wrestled with the pros and cons as well as legal implications of promoting online gaming sites and decided to stay away from it. The exception was UK-based programs managed out of our UK office. There is a lot of advertising dollars floating out there for those brave enough to take them. This year at Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas I noticed that there were quite a few players (advertisers, affiliates and gaming networks) present in the exhibition hall – I am sure they are planning to attend this July’s Affiliate Summit in Orlando as well.

I do not think that the gaming industry participants at AS LV had anything to do with where is took place. Only time will tell if they will attend AS Orlando but I am willing to bet you $100, they'll be there.

Todd, thanks for flagging that article, it was a worthwhile read (and congrats Brad on your quotation).

I too noticed the considerable number of casino booths at the Affiliate Summit, but I thought it might have to do with the Vegas location. If I were a casino merchant, I would assume my affiliates would likely be in a casino mood while conferencing in the middle of Bally’s. I’ll be curious to find out if those same merchants are will reapppear in the more family-oriented Orlando.

So far, more than half of the booths are sold for Orlando (exhibitors listed at http://www.affiliatesummit.com/Exhibitor_List.pdf) and there are indeed gaming sites with a presence.

An interesting thing I heard from multiple gaming affiliate programs in Vegas was that they were interested in recruiting “mainstream” affiliates.

We at AzoogleAds decided to abandon all gaming offers from our network as well. The risks simply outweigh the rewards of running these offers. The amazing thing, however, is the prevalence of advertising by all sorts of online sportsbooks, casinos and poker rooms all over television and traditional media. Everywhere you look, there is a PartyPoker, PokerRoom, Sports Betting etc ads. Just pay attention to the billboards next time you arrive in New York, there are more gambling billboards than you can count.

You have to wonder, what's the big difference? Why is it wrong to market poker rooms for online ad agencies, and why is it okay for the same poker rooms to buy billboard space all around the US and on some of the largest television broadcasting networks?

Look for more offline ad buys. PartyPoker nabbed StubHub’s offline media buyer recently.

Here in the UK we have new gambling laws kicking in soon. The heart of the matter is online gambling advertising, here in the UK going forwards you can not be seen to be enticing or encouraging gambling. The days of affiliates promoting bonus offer ads are coming to a close and a new strategy will have to be employed for new customer acquisitions. I don't think it's a bad thing… it may bring things back down to a level playing field? (Time will tell)

But certainly the way online bingo merchants advertise has got to be through main stream affiliates, its those consumers they want. Makes sense and I am pleased. Be interesting to see how this pans out in the UK http://www.opsi.gov.uk/ACTS/acts2005/20050019.htm
