Free In-Depth Competitor Analysis and Keyword Research

Velocityscape announced today the beta launch of their sequel to their already popular free GoogSpy Service called SpyFu.

SpyFu offers free Website and Keyword analysis for organic and paid search. It has over 20 times the amount of data than its predecessor GoogSpy and tons of new features.

You can approach the data from 3 sides and change the approach instantly because SpyFu provides cross links for any detail shown in its result pages.

  • Keyword or Key Phrase specific research and analysis
  • Website (Domain) specific data including top keywords and top competitors
  • Category specifc data. The Tree-like navigation structure was taken from the DMoz directory

Keyword specifc data
You can see information like average cost per click for the Keyword, Clicks/Day, Number of Advertisers, Cost/Day and Search Results in Google. Also sites that compete for the keyword in the organic and paid search results.

It shows other Keywords targeted by the same sites that compete for the Keyword you are looking at and related keywords (works like any keyword suggestion tool).

Example results for the Term: Affiliate Marketing.

Website specific data
See the top 10 terms for organic search and for paid advertisement. Estimated daily advertising budget, Total Clicks/Day, Avg. Cost/Click, Avg. Clicks/Day, Avg. Clicks/Day, Avg. Ad Competitors, Avg. Ad Percentile and SEO factors like Alexa Rank, number of Incoming Links and Avg. Load Time.

It also shows known subdomains and even allows drilldowns to individual pages in some cases. You can see the top organic and top paid search competitors and the websites catgeory/niche it was assigned to based on its ranking and advertising behavior.

Example results for the Domain: ReveNews.com.

Category specific data
It shows per Category additional Sub Categories, Related Search Terms and Related Domains.

Example results for the Category: Computers > Internet > Web Design and Development > Authoring > Webmaster Resources.

The only drawback is that the beta is not providing up-to date data. The Data on the free beta site is a few month old. It is a great supplement to the set of tools you should consider using to monitor and analyze the activities of your competitors in your industry, perform a Ranking Analysis of your Site in all major Search Engines and monitoring your on site traffic via Web Analytics software or services.

Shawn Collins wrote about SpyFu already on Monday before the offical launch at his Site AffiliateTip.com.

This tool is a very cost effective resource that should not be missing in the book mark list of every serious internet marketer. For the big players out there might be the enterprise Competitive Inteligence solution by VelocityScape worth the time to take a closer look at.

According to Michael J. Roberts, President of Velocityscape (and Proprietor of SpyFu), "SpyFu.com has nearly 20 times more data than GoogSpy, and the coolest statistics imaginable. This time we believe did it right."

Just how did they scrape all of this data? It's called click and impression fraud with a bot. I think these people are going to have some big trouble.

I don't think that they scrape off the data from the SE for SpyFu or their commercial competitive intelligence service. Its way too much data to scrape.

They would have to simulate the population of a small to mid-size European country to get that data scraped off without being blocked. I don't think so. It will be a mix of a lot of different legit sources such as API Data, ISP Provider Data and Users that allow tracking via a browser plug-in, usually toolbar.

Can we put together a collection to help SpyFu spring for some decent hosting?

It's been down far more than up today.

I think VelocityScape has the money for decent hosting. They said its beta and not a Web 2.0 type of Beta, basically a real one. Bugs, Down times etc. People expect since this stupid everything "beta" trend for live sites started that Beta means new ;)

They scrape- just not in the "conventional fahion". Actually I think I know exactly how they do it. I'll see if my hypothesis holds true.
