An inspiring affiliate update email

June 29th, 2004 by Ola Edvardsson

Are you an affiliate? Do you get nice little email updates in your inbox from different merchants?

Most affiliate communications are about special promotions, commission changes, new links or products or contests. Nothing wrong with that. That is exactly the kind of information that an affiliate would like to know about. But come on… the truth is that most affiliate updates are very impersonal, corporate sounding and flat-out boring.

My friend Marlon Sanders is not only a marketing genius. He is also running
an amazingly good affiliate program and have the most upbeat and entertaining
affiliate updates I’ve seen.

Here is his reseller update for June. Make sure to click the play button in the upper left, turn up your speakers and see how audio can be used in addition to text.

A little bit of Marlon Sanders inspiration in all affiliate programs would make the revenue-sharing world a better place to make money in.

Actually, the first time I logged in to the affiliate interface, that page *appalled* me.

I find it very unsettling to have my real name printed on a non-secure page. If I were a top converting affiliate, I sure wouldn’t want my URL being displayed so all my competition could *easily* find my ad copy and lift it.

I bought gimmemymoneynow. The first version. In April. Yes, I got my “money’s worth” in that I have plenty of ideas. Bonuses were not delivered without me logging a support ticket. The “Insider Scoop” newsletters that were supposed to be available in the silver membership area were not ever linked from there. Support told me I was supposed to have been added to an auto-responder to get them. (Even though the silver membership area stated that the newsletters would be available there). When I did receive the “Insider Scoop” newsletters, they were just recycled material from Marlon’s products. Almost word for word.

I’m supposed to be excited about marketing such a product?

Am I going to give his “system” a try? Yes. But Marlon has proven to me that it is *not* all that simple to totally automate your product delivery, and that a less than excellent product does not make for repeat buyers.

As for motivating affiliates, a great conversion rate and big commission will motivate the 20% who will actually be your sales force. Don’t sweat the other 80%, they exist for statitical purposes ;-).
