Prior to April it appeared that YPN’s main focus was to clean up in terms of their beta publishers and international traffic / clicks. Many calls were made, many emails were sent, and many beta publishers had their accounts cancelled due to much international traffic or too many international clicks. I have spoken with my account manager at YPN multiple times and she continues to encourage all YPN publishers to have some type of Geo IP Targeting tool to only display YPN ads to US based visitors.
Now we fast forward to April / May 2006, when YPN begins another house cleaning project with the aim to clean up a bit of the overly creative ad placements. Several beta publishers I know have received a recent email from YPN reading something like this:
As you may know, Yahoo! Publisher Network beta program policies and terms and conditions prohibit “click incentives” to users viewing your pages that contain Yahoo! contextual ads. During a regular review, we found that one or more of your web pages were in violation of this policy. Specifically, we found that the following page(s) actively encourages users to click on ad units:
www.##########.com
PLEASE NOTE: It must be clear to the user that Yahoo! Ads are different from content found on the Publisher’s Web site. Images, animations, photos, texts and other items placed too close to Yahoo! Ads may confuse the user as to what is the content of the Publisher’s site and what are the Yahoo! Ads.
If you wish to continue as a participant in the Yahoo! Publisher Network program, we ask that you make changes to your web site to conform with the requirement described above. Please make the changes within 5 business days. After making the requested changes, please reply to this email so that we
may review your web site and update your account records to reflect your adherence with our Yahoo! Publisher Network Beta Terms and Conditions and Program Policies. Please be assured that we look forward to your continued participation in the program. If you have questions or concerns about the changes we’re asking for, please do not hesitate to contact us.
For many, these emails had brought about fear and worry. This is due to the fact that they have been enjoying what some are calling the “YPN Money Train” for many months now. I see it as YPN being a responsible up and coming PPC network, needing to take care of overly creative publishers on behalf of their paying advertisers. I do hope; however, that YPN will clarify with detail some of the questions regarding ad placement and pictures next to ads.
