I really hate to do it. You know, give the nay-sayers any more linkage then they have already gotten (and that they know they are going to get already, which is partly why they chose to write it in the first place probably). But there simply needs to be a response to yet another story about how blogs are a bubble that is going to burst with a giant POP. Hat tip to Blog Herald.
This week’s culprit is USA Today’s Kevin Maney who writes ‘Once blogs ‘change everything,’ fascination with them will chill‘. Yet another ‘blogs are cool, but not for long’ piece that includes the standard stats from the Pew, plus a few good quotes from some blogging evangelists, and the inevitable conclusion that despite all of its coolness, it’s eventually going to fade away.
The only thing missing from this piece is some soundbites from Nick Denton, Jason Calacanis and Henry Copeland of Blogads. No offense guys, but it’s almost a pleasure to not see your name on a piece about blogging. You know, you guys can turn down interviews once in a while. :]
But I digress…back to the death of blogs. He’s party right.
Certainly each new technology is significant and alters the dynamics of society and business. Blogs are doing just that. But in the past, each technology has also gone through a cycle of superhype, followed by a hype-o-glycemic crash. After that, the technology reaches equilibrium and steadily evolves into a crucial piece of the global fabric.
Ok, well, nothing stays this hot forever, except the sun, and even scientists agree that it’s eventually going to pop.
I simply see blogging as an extension of what we have always done on the Net- communicated. It will evolve, it will change, but we will still be communicating no matter what we call it.
It will become as ubiquitous as the telephone, email and IM. It will evolve, but I think it is here to stay. The housing market is supposed to crash any day now as well, but people will still be living in houses after the “crash”.
