Personal Branding: Is Your Online Brand Protected?

March 31st, 2006 by Jim Kukral

Take the most recent tom-foolery by David Lewis buying Jeff Molander.com as a perfect example of why you should be concerned about your personal brand online. Is your personal brand protected? Let’s run a test on ReveNews authors to see who has thier own domain name.

Personal branding goes far, far beyond having your own domain name. Of course, there are always other people in the world who have your same name, so perhaps you can’t get your domain name. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to control what people see about you when they search for you.

For example, I have a friend who has recently been trying to reduce his association with a former company. Every time someone searches for his name, the former company listing would appear most often, and now it is in position to hurt him possibly. The first question I asked him was, “Do you own yourname.com? And if not, why?”

Every public internet professional (and I could argue non Internet people too) needs to have a home to hang their hat on, online. Consider it a one-stop shop for your personal brand… a safe haven for your changing career/life. Do you think you’ll be in the same job forever? Not likely. Do you think you’re ever going to change your name into symbol like Prince? Not likely either.

Lastly, have you thought about the future? For me, I have children, and I’ve already gone ahead and registered thier .com names to give to them if they need them in the future.

Don’t let this happen to you.

Yep, you should buy your name. As far as Scott, I think he should buy scottjangro but keep using jangro.com. I think it’s a cool name, easy to remember and brand.

I have a couple of nephews, 1 and 3 yrs. old and I bought them domains with their name :) and they’ll get them when they’re older.

yeah, I’ve had jangro.com forever and consider that my personal brand. Most people just call me “jangro” anyway.

Never worried about getting scottjangro.com, until the recent invasion of the the point-making body snatchers, and now the spotlight. What’s one more domain…

oh yeah, one more thing…

Darn you AGAIN, David Lewis!

TripleJangro.com is available. Hmmmm, tempting.

Ya, I have all three of my kids names, just in case.

IhateWaynePorter.com is also available, never would’ve guessed that. ;)

Which gives me an idea….

For a publisher David Lewis seems to have quite the knack at brand building. Look at what he did for “triple jangro” which to the affiliate marketing world might be up there with “bling bling” (now just “bling” it seems) in the world of Hip Hop. And now look at Jeff Molander.

Hmmm, affiliates helping with branding…now there is a thought. :-)

Please get I Hate Wayne Porter and revive my tee-shirt sales.

My only hatred is for the BCS. I own ihatebcs.com and ih8bcs.com. The site is down but T-shirts are still available.
