Turnabout: What Affiliate Managers Want

July 11th, 2008 by Jeff Molander

When is the last time you’ve heard anyone in our industry talk about what affiliate MANAGERS want. Let’s set aside that popular question of “what do affiliates really want?” (need you to give them) and explore what YOU want, managers.

Tell the world WHAT YOU WANT! (and I’ll publish the results in a few days)

Let’s blue sky it a bit.

As an affiliate manager, do you want…

  1. Better recognition and respect internally among your superiors?
  2. Better tools to do your job?
  3. More autonomy — to be allowed by the boss to “get creative” occasionally, try something new?
  4. More budget to foster creativity?
  5. Better understanding from leaders in my company of affiliate marketing as an affordable customer acquisition tool?
  6. A team environment: less competition and more collaboration with search, email and other channels?
  7. A better compensation structure?
  8. A place where I can go to learn from respected experts first, party second?
  9. A trusted, “go-to” resource on performance-based marketing of all flavors that’s up-to-date?
  10. Less whiners and negativity in our business — more doers, risk-takers and brotherhood?

How badly do we, as affiliate managers, need each of these things? Maybe we don’t need them at all.
Tell the world WHAT YOU WANT… and I’ll publish the results in a few days!

Wow. Data rolling in already. Thanks, y’all!

Interesting post. It’s always said that affiliates come 1st. But good points to what we want with in the corporate world.

Cool post. I would want my clients to spend more dollars to grow their programs via ppc and recruiting emails…making my job easier. :)

Hey Jeff –
Mark here, we’ve talked before about this very question.
To put it in writing – what we as managers want really depends on each program.
In the end regardless of what program you are managing the most important measurement is that of conversions. If you run a PPC program – you need those clicks to convert to sales. PPL – you need those leads converting to sales. CPM – you need those impressions to convert to clicks, leads, sales.

As managers what we need are affiliates who provide the quality we are looking for.

I am also an affiliate and as such I understand where my merchants are coming from when they are looking for conversions, sales, good leads – QUALITY.
Any affiliate who believes in a product – markets it and creates a solid site to support it will in most cases have the good quality we need.
Affiliates creating a site a day loaded with ads, pop ups, etc. may last a while or may fly under the radar unnoticed but in the end they just clutter the web and muddy the quality waters.
I think I speak for most aff managers when I say we are looking for quality.
Am I wrong?

Very tough to be a affiliate, the market is over saturated I don’t see how anybody new can make any money.
