Microsoft Surface™ Computing with Multi-Touch Technology

March 16th, 2008 by Heather Paulson

Microsoft Surface™ is a 30-inch display in a table-like form factor that small groups can use at the same time. The technology is amazing and the application of the Surface is becoming of interest to hotels, retail establishments, restaurants and public entertainment venues. I can see the value of this technology as well in a host of other business organizations! In a marketing agency environment the Microsoft Surface™ would be ideal for interacting with clients!

Microsoft Surface™ units are expected to hit the market by this coming spring 2008! Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled Microsoft Surface™ at the May 2007 Wall Street Journal’s, All Things Digital conference. There is a YouTube Video out that showcases the impressive features of the Surface, click here to see the video.

There are four key attributes to the Microsoft Surface™
Direct interaction. Users can actually “grab” digital information with their hands, interacting with content by touch and gesture, without the use of a mouse or keyboard.
Multi-touch. Surface computing recognizes many points of contact simultaneously, not just from one finger like a typical touch-screen, but up to dozens of items at once.
Multi-user. The horizontal form factor makes it easy for several people to gather

around surface computers together, providing a collaborative, face-to-face computing experience.
Object recognition. Users can place physical objects on the surface to trigger different types of digital responses, including the transfer of digital content.

With Microsoft Surface, order a beverage during your meal with just the tap of a finger.

Microsoft Surface puts restaurants, hotels, shopping and theaters at your fingertips.

Use Microsoft Surface to quickly browse through music, dragging favorite songs onto a personal playlist.

View, sort, stack and organize photos with your hands on Microsoft Surface.

Instantly compare items while shopping with Microsoft Surface.

ok….. I want one.. ;-)

I think this technology will be huge. I’m not sure if Microsoft will be the enabler or the one to build all the cool gadgets but somebody (or multiple somebodies) will do it.

Think of this use: Wouldn’t it be nice if we could have our own standards-compliant wireless unit in our cell phone or GPS that could interact with all drive-thru terminals at fast food restaurants? I could store my preferences and beam them to their terminal as I drive by and then pick up my meal. No confusion, repeating and frustration and my credit card could be charged automatically in the process.

Hello Mike,

Excellent points – the abilities with this device are seemingly endless. On my list of desires right now is a quad screen and a new rack and tower, this Surface is on my wish list also!

SWEET!

I’ll have to wait on buying a coffee table till the end of this year when i can get one of these :P

I put up a video about this last June.

Nifty stuff, very nice (in theory). I wonder how much it will be and how reliable it is.

And if you thing that the “Surface” stuff is cool, wait until you saw this Photosynth DEMO.

(Seadragon plus fun stuff mix)
