Blog World Expo 2008 – Keynote Recap, Day 1

I have the good fortune of attending Blog World this weekend as an official ReveNews writer. I’m really enjoying attending a conference from this perspective, it reminds me of running down stories for my high school and college papers. Good times.

Yesterday’s keynote was great. The presentation was actually two in one; the first being a delivery of a Technorati blog survey by it’s CEO Richard Jalichandra, and the second by the tag team duo of Chris Alden and Anil Dash of Six Apart.

Jalichandra’s presentation was chock full of great information. This year, Technorati surveyed the top bloggers to see exactly who they were, what they were doing, why they blog and more to discover trends in this industry. The data he shared was voluminous but let me share the points I was able to jot down (my carpel tunnel is flaring up after 6 pages of notes):

  • Comscore reported 77 million unique visitors reading blogs while eMarketer reported 84 million.
  • 76,000 blogs in Technorati have an authority of 50 or more
  • 2/3 of bloggers are male
  • 50% are between the ages of 18 and 34
  • 72% of blogs are published in English
  • 46% of the bloggers surveyed considered themselves professional bloggers
  • Out of all the topics the bloggers could designate their blogs as, 43% chose ”Other”
  • 43% spend more than ten hours per week blogging
  • 1 out of 4 use 3 or more advertising tools
  • CPM’s are on par with traditional media
  • The top 10% of bloggers post ten times or more PER DAY

I don’t know about you, but ten times seems like a lot. I’m all for pontificating my personal views often, because I’m sure everyone loves to hear what I have to say as much as I like to tell them, but I’m not sure my wife would want to hear from me ten times a day. Seriously though, that is a very telling number. The more you post, the more you are read. Richard’s advice was clear: “write and write it often”.

Technorati is releasing this study on their website on Monday. It will contain much more data than I was able to include here, so be sure to check it out.
