Revisiting Autopilot Affiliate Campaigns

September 5th, 2007 by Dave Martin

I often get so busy looking for “greener pastures” as an affiliate, that I forget about the untapped potential of my current sites.

So… I set a goal a few weeks ago to go through all of my affiliate sites and revisit the ones that have basically been on autopilot. You know, the ones that you haven’t added keywords to, or even taken time to do a thorough ROAS analysis in months - but that consistently make you money, month after month.

I began to wonder how much money I was leaving on the table with these existing niche sites.

Here are a few of the things I’ve done:

  1. Added fresh new content
  2. Added highly targeted ad groups, where previously many keywords were lumped together that shouldn’t have been
  3. Redid keyword research, utilizing a few new tools/techniques
  4. Added a few new PPC ads to my highest & lowest performing ad groups
  5. Ran a few Google website optimizer tests
  6. Tested out a few new domain names in my PPC ads

In terms of time and energy, I put much less effort into this re-evaluation than I would have with a new niche site, and the outcome was ten times what I expected. Have any ideas to add to the list?

Great post Dave! I have one idea to add, I think you’d include it in your “keyword research” line, but i think it’s worthy of it’s own mention.

Analyze all the accumulated analytics data.

Sometimes you’ll uncover areas where you’re realizing free seo traffic that you hadn’t thoroughly considered monetizing in the past. Also a good time to rethink navigation structure so it further highlights pages that the search engines seem to like.

You’re right about the untapped potential view. I think of it as returning to an old trusted maple tree and retapping that sucker to let the fresh syrup flow.

And if you’ve lost interest in updating it and it’s getting traffic and/or making money, also a good time to give some thought to selling the site.
