Ad:tech NYC just wrapped up mid-afternoon yesterday, so I figured I’d add on to the other commentary going on around the webspace.
I took a moment to re-read my first ad:tech experience, and I have to say it’s interesting to have even a 7 month window in to how our online marketplace continues to evolve. I did get a chance to say hi to the folks at ClickForensics who reported that overall click fraud rates are remaining steady from what they reported at ad:tech San Francisco.
Also interesting was that the conversation has translated from social networking platforms like Myspace to a more comprehensive look at consumer generated content and media. I’ve spent some time worrying about brand perception and behaviors in social platforms, but overall it seems like that conversation has shifted away from individual platforms and opened up to the future of the entire web.
Mobile, Mobile, Mobile… Video, Video, Video.
If there were two overwhelming themes of the show, they were “how do I monetize mobile” and “how do I monetize video”? Several new and existing companies were busy working on those two infrastructures, but I’m not completely convinced that we’re there yet. As Kevin Ryan (CEO of ShopWiki) stated in his Wednesday keynote address, mobile was the future in 1996, and mobile still remains the future in 2006. The most important opportunities revolve in certain aspects of mobile - people don’t shop for their next car on their cell phone, but they do want to know what the best restaurant is. Learning to find out what specifically users want to do with their mobile phone is the future.
I can say, ad:tech NYC needs a bigger space. The bottlenecks were rediculous, and the floor itself made conversations challenging at best.
On the party side, I have to compliment the folks that threw together the amazing Crobar event (which included Forge, XY7, Vayan, and many more)! The venue was spectacular, and even though I’m not a huge fan of crowded clubs, there was enough space to go to venture away from the insanity, relax and enjoy a few drinks. For night two, Zanox invited me out to a great lounge event on 5th Ave which was the perfect Tuesday night event: not over-crowded, not too loud, but some great conversation, good music, and a spectacular venue.
I’m pretty happy to also announce that we’re covering the event on our new AffiliatePrograms.com Blog, so I welcome you all to stop by and learn more about the specific conversations I had with some great networks, merchants, and solutions providers, as well as a few of the sessions I happened to catch. If we happened to run in to each other and you dropped my card, I welcome you to follow up with me at Dave (at) AffiliatePrograms.com.
Hope I see you at PubCon next week!
