The New Year brings us vast lists of what has past and sets up for lists of what is yet to come. We all make resolutions - whether formal or not - and certainly should. It’s our time to set goals and plan for next moves - with a certain amount of modification to those goals as we go along. So here’s my “7 for 07.” Pick and chose those that might work for you.
1. Listen and learn. Your customers are trying to tell you something. It could be the products they purchase, or those that they abandon in their cart. Maybe it’s the emails or calls that never really get proper answering or attention. Or it’s the pages they read at your site or those they never really find. Each of these represents customer intelligence; use it to your benefit.
2. Think before you act. Seems simple, huh? Not really. The speed of the Internet has made us all very reactive. Certainly, time is of the essence, however not at the expense of the result. Review data carefully before coming up with a plan. “Imagine” what’s next to quickly test some solutions. Refer back to #1.
3. Read and absorb. A never ending battle we are all fighting together: information overload. We are now inundated with more knowledge that we can really ever absorb, so you really need a plan of what to read and when. Take 30 to 60 minutes each morning to cover key news sites, newspapers, podcasts, then take another 30 to 60 minutes at the end of the day. You’d be surprised how much you can learn even in what seems to be short amount of time, and how much more comfortable you are when you are well versed on what’s going on. Pick out your favorites and start to train your brain - ReveNews is a great place to start!
4. Organize. Yourself, your team, your customers - organization starts with people and tasks. Make sure the right people have the right tasks. Keep your customers on that same focus as well; make sure they understand key steps and follow your path.
5. Be prepared for change. It’s all about change. Web 2.0 strategies help us to visualize and expound upon new ways to communicate and exchange information. How can you use these new strategies to affect better processes for your company or clients?
6. Share and share different. Web 2.0 strategies have opened us up to a somewhat more democratic Internet space where we can even more freely share information with the world. But all that sharing has left us without a lot of, well, crap, amongst some really great or at least entertaining information. What can you do to “share different”?
7. Finally…go walk your dogs. I know, I always bring it back to my dogs, but with good reason. You really need to go out and clear your head everyday. Great minds don’t work without a little reprieve. Walk the dog…go to the gym…take a hike…do what you can each day to regenerate the mind and body and get away from the cool blue glow of your computer display. I promise, it will be there when you get back.
Excellent points Caryl! I need to do all of those!
