In Web 2.0 is everything about people and their opinion. Community Sites like Del.icio.us lets share people their bookmarks, Digg lets people vote on News Stories people think are important. StubledUpon took that concept a bit further and let people with the same interest interact and also provide more than just a 1-Click vote or the Addition of a few tags by allowing users to write and discuss full fledged reviews.
The important thing with all those services is that “Ring” or “Group” building is an essential part if you want to make sure that your voice is being heart. This urge to control and influence others is probably a human trait that you can not simply educate away and will remain with us for generations to come.
The problem is that this group building causes the building of groups that are completely against the other group, seeing each other as “enemy”.
This behavior and the sometimes “ugly” manifestations of those structures are an issue for most social sites and none of them has found a solution for this yet.
I came across another service today which seems to be fairly new, because the “usual crowd” did not show up in force you and made their presence felt.
The Site is called TheBestStuffInTheWorld.com and is not referring to itself with that name, but lets people create and express what they believe to be the best in existing or new categories and sub categories anybody can create.

If the “thing” or “activity” you feel strong about already exists, you can extend it and provide additional arguments or expand it to other categories.
You then simply vote what this is the Best Of, or if you are competing with something else go and express what you think about the “other” 2nd, 3rd or XXXX best in the world in the categories you care about :). Express that there is something better! Yes!
If you are kind of neutral but are intrigued only bookmark it without expressing a strong connection with it.
I don’t know, but it seems to me that this service is adding “salt to the wound” and tries to encourage this normally unwanted behaviour at social sites. Interesting to watch where this will be going.
Oh yes, I almost forgot. I added ReveNews and voted it the best in various categories like “Business Blogs”, “News Blogs”, “Affiliate Marketing Blogs” and a few more, because I think it is the best.
And by the way, I picked up a “Vote Bubble” for it which I added to this post that everybody who agrees with me can vote for it, or against it if you don’t, but I dare you to even think about that.. hehehe.
Cheers and Merry Christmas!
Saw this earlier after you picked it up and voted for ReveNews due to a Google Alert. Interesting service, but I’m not sure where the difference is between this and a StumbleUpon or even del.icio.us type service. I still prefer MyBlogLog for the community networking type of thing. I’m meeting all sorts of wonderful people on there I wouldn’t have come across otherwise!
I am almost more amazed how quickly google picked it up. It must have been only an hour or two since I created the entry at TheBestStuffInTheWorld, interesting.
I see a difference between this service and others. Digg, StumbledUpon etc are about news or general content and the user simply expresses like or dislike.
At TheBestStuffInTheWorld are users expressing their opinion about general things which are more limited in quantity. You can only have so much favorites which makes it more important to revisit what you voted in the past. It would be nice to be able to see somewhere if and when you changed the opinion about something.
I think the user profile of a user will be the heaven on earth for psychiatrists and other people. You can take the provided information and make a lot with it. It is nothing for people that are heavily concerned about their privacy, that is for sure.
MyBlogLog is a different beast and I have to applaud to the person who came up with the idea to change the nature of the service to what it is today. I am a pro-subscriber to MyBlogLog since May for Blog Analytics (like Performancing). The Community aspect was implemented in July and from there on did it spread like a wildfire.
I have to say that MyBlogLog is now one of my favorite Social Media Services that out there. It really adds practical value to your life and lets you easily explore and discover new people and blogs that are out there that share the same interests. Technorati does not work that well and also not services like blogexplosion.com etc.
Good comment and post, Carsten…
but wouldn’t it be better if this service had something like a “Good…Better…Best…Bestest” sort of rating function rather than just “Best”?
I mean, I love me some ReveNews, but I do think there are a few other blogs discussing online marketing in this space that I’d like to include on that service (and no, I’m not counting CPN).
There needs to be shades of grey and other colors built in to make this extremely beneficial (and valuable).
That’s why my comment about the encouragement of some of the not so nice side effects of social media in my original post.
You are either for it against it or neutral. Nothing in between.
We will see how this plays out.
