One of the biggest keys to getting the most out of conferences (after having attended at least 25 over the years) is to set-up a schedule of quick meetings about half the time, while leaving enough time to bump into people you may know who are attending. Also, don't be afraid to approach people and introduce yourself. Be as friendly as you can in general. Lame people at conferences don't meet anyone.

IMO, even more important than the actual conference is properly following up with everyone you met there and making a deal happen. A phone call is best.

I am not getting any email notifications about any comments made on my blog posts.. not to mention about comments that get stuck for approval :(

Lisa,

I first thought that this had to do with common habits, preferences and interest... so you bump into the same people over and over again, because you have stuff in common that brings you to the same place at the same time...

however, that can not be the reason, because at every conference I am experience the same, but with DIFFERENT people.

The folks I bumped into all the time at one conference are not necessarily the ones I bump into all the time at the next conference. You might not bump into the folks at the next conference at all.

Some really great tips here. Everyone keeps telling me how important it is to bring way more business cards than you think you will need.

"I am working on a theory that explains why it is that you tend to bump into the same 4-5 guys at a conference all the time, while you never bump into some folks at all, especially the ones that you really wanted to bump into in the first place."

Carsten, how funny that you bring this up.

A colleague of mine and I spent an hour at Web 2.0 a few months ago trying to determine if there was an actual word for this phenomenon and if not, could we come up with something witty. sadly, we couldn't make up a word that truly worked.

Good stuff, I passed the link on to my mentoree myself!

Since you mentioned business cards I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that www.PsPrint.com has a great deal on business cards as well as a low-price guarantee. During August we're also offering free shipping on business cards, so there's plenty of time to order at the beginning of August and get the cards in time for the summit.

We also have an affiliate program on CJ.
