It is right and good to honor outstanding achievements and accomplishments by individuals or companies in your industry to let them know that their contribution was not only noticed but also appreciated.
Only a few weeks ago was the second annual Affiliate Summit Pinnacle Awards ceremony held during the Affiliate Summit 2008 West conference at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
There are also the network specific awards, such as the annual Commission Junction Horizon Awards, which are presented every year at CJ’s Commission Junction University conference in the month of September in Santa Barbara, California. The first Horizon Awards ceremony was held during CJU 2002. Then there are the annual LinkShare’s Golden Link Awards, which were first presented in 2004 in New York City, New York, during the LinkShare Symposium 2004 conference.
Then there is of course also the annual ABestWeb Awards, which were given to accomplished members of the affiliate marketing community in the year 2002. The difference between the ABestWeb Awards and the three other awards that I already mentioned, is the fact that nominations of the candidates as well as the nomination of the actual winners is done solely by the community.
Everybody who wants to vote can do that. Each vote count’s equal. The other awards allow nomination of candidates by the community, but make the decision of who the winner will be via a committee that was assembled by the host of the awards himself. There is room for manipulation although I also have to say, that I have not noticed any skewing of award presentations so far. Everybody who won any of the awards in the past did actually deserve it.
The awards nomination process for the ABestWeb Awards 2007 is currently in process. You can nominate anybody you like until Monday, March 24, 2008. Then, from March 24th until April 7th (for 2 weeks) are the polls open to cast votes for any of the nominees. The winners will be announced on Monday, April 7, 2008.
Nominations are being accepted for the following categories.

After all this niceness and giving kudos where kudos are due and deserved, I did also think about all the stuff that did not go so well during the same time period. Since there is no body for the affiliate marketing industry to police itself and ban or outlaw bad behavior, mischief and immoral business practices, bad things just happen and go unnoticed. I maybe ought to say “unnoticed” within the affiliate marketing industry or at least “nobody talks about it“, but often noted by outsiders who use this to gauge the industry as a whole.
So I decided to start the nominations for the unofficial “ABestWeb Poo-List Awards 2007” where I nominated players of this industry for their not so nice and pleasant accomplishments and actions they have taken during the last year to point then out and put them into the pillory for everybody to see.
The nominations are biased and based on my own personal experiences and opinions, but so are all nominations in general. Feel free to nominate your favorites (you can do so anonymously without the fear of repercussions and the wrath of the company you are outing) and if we get enough together, we might launch a poll to decide on the winners. There will be no awards ceremony, because the award is not really the type of trophy anybody who receives it would be much proud of, but it would be a signal.
Who knows one or the other nominee might get and understands the signal and will make changes to improve and do better. We have a (sarcastic) saying in Germany that translates to “Once your reputation is entirely ruined you can live the rest of your life without having any shame“, which is often used by scoundrels and thugs and never meant serious if used by any decent person who has some morals left in his body. I hope that the receivers of the signal are not living by that saying and might take a closer look at what they are doing in order to fix what is broke and maybe find them nominated for one of the positive Awards during next year’s award nominations.
Cheers!
Carsten its about time we had a little POO in our awards. Its also time we self policed our community to ensure that legit marketers and networks dont get hurt by the Poo’s!
We are thinking of creating MediaTrust.org that is for all the legit marketers to be a part of and self police the org and the markets. any advertisers or publisher working with a .org member would know they could trust their partners integrity and the integrity of any members… i think its time!
