Just got off the phone with an affiliate, one of those smart ones that you actually do get to meet in person. I’ll provide the facts, you provide feedback:
- Affiliate has long-standing site with static pages
- Affiliate has Linkshare (linksynergy) links up
- A visitor to affiliate’s site reports a broken link, affiliate investigates
- Affiliate notices that the one broken tracking link looks different…it says “00linksynergy” instead of “linksynergy”
- Affiliate corrects link, does some more investigation and calls me because he doesn’t know what happened.
So what do you think happened?
WhoIs says the “00linksynergy.com” domain was purchased on March 26, 2005. And if you go to that website, it offers a search engine.
Anyone have any ideas?
ok, I’ll bite. Here’s my theory.
Is it just one link that was changed? If so, I’m guessing that your affiliate accidentally created that typo and someone took advantage of it.
There must be people out there with the ability to see traffic that’s being driven on domains that aren’t registered, scoop them up, and put catch-all pages like the one at 00linksynergy.com. Free money.
I’m with Scott on this; if you Google that domain the only hit is one affiliate link, so I do think this was an affiliate typo. If that page had been unchanged for a long time then there was plenty of time for someone to notice it and take advantage of the misspelling.
Actually it probally a type o but when I was an affiliate I had this once in a while when I copied from LinkShare. This just shows you be careful and double check the link.
