Web 2.0 Summit, Google, Facebook & iLike

October 19th, 2007 by Beth Kirsch

I spend the past few days taking a break from the grind of driving revenue to sit and think a bit about Web 2.0 and disruptive technology at the Web 2.0 Summit.

A number of people said to me in the past Google was the overarching company at this conference, but this year, that changed, the buzz was all about Facebook. No surprise there, but when Mary Meeker from Morgan Stanley through up this slide, it did make me think how fast the world changes.

You can get the full presentation here and it’s pretty interesting.

Clearly Facebook is changing the web and I thought I’d share my favorite example from the conference.

Ali Partovi, the CEO and founder of iLIke, told the story that he bet on FaceBook Platform and threw resources against it early on. The Platform launched on Friday, May 25 and within the first hour ILike had 2000 sign ups for it’s app, and then the growth quickened, and the iLike team realized they only has enough servers to support the growth through Sunday — you have to love viral growth. ;-)
Anyway, Ali said, iLike is now the top traffic provider for iTunes and one of the top traffic providers for one of the ticket services. Here is the best part, iLIke has affiliate links in the its widget. Ka-ching! Think about that for a second, someone built a whole biz on affiliate marketing by launching an Facebook app 4 months ago. You just gotta love this business some days.

Well, the real question is are they making any money, I have been the top traffic provider in many programs at different times over the years and haven’t made a damn thing from some of them, while knocking it down in the others. Traffic is great, money is better.
