Become an Affiliate Narc: Part III

July 27th, 2004 by Beth Kirsch

The truth is emerging I thought as I read “Become an Affiliate Narc”. Wayne Porter asks if the Affiliate Networks are indeed trusted third parties for merchants and affiliates. Wayne does a great job of asking the right questions.

As you might know, some downloadable software programs “high-jack” honest affiliates’ commissions for themselves. If you don’t know about this issue, you can visit Parasiteware to find out more.

Wayne’s point of view is as a guru in the field. I wanted to ask some questions as affiliate manager because it’s important to understand this perspective too in order to think about solutions.

These are my questions to the affiliate and online marketing community:

  • Who in the merchants’ marketing department actually sees the issues that Wayne raises versus who is impacted by them?
  • How much is the pressure for that person to meet aggressive sales numbers as their primary objective?
  • Does the sales goal, inherently, possess a dis-incentive to shave costs that may, concurrently, impact sales numbers?
  • If an AM finds that they are, in fact, somewhat dependant on what goes on inside the networks (specifically, generation of revenue that comes at a cost that should be scrutinized… if not eliminated) can they be blamed for looking the other way?
  • In times where they should focus a more critical eye, what can the AM actually do to get out of this messy situation where goals might be improperly set by superiors? (Job security note: this has not happened to me at Audible)
  • What can we all do to help solve the issues that Wayne raises?
  • There are solutions that ensure the financial viability of merchants, networks and affiliates. I’ve been thinking a lot about them lately. Leadership on this issue has been sorely lacking for years. So one last question: if there is strong leadership on this issue, will you follow?
