Writing about what we do and thus know is a given, including references to relevant projects, if they serve the purpose to illustrate or supplement the subject matter or to reinforce the credibility of the author (You can not assume that every reader knows all the bloggers of ReveNews.com to avoid the question "Who are you?" :) ) I am not much of a news blogger myself, but I think that it is kind of important to cover that aspect as well. Big news are a natural seed for discussions and debates, but some news simply trigger a silent acknowledgement and nothing more. Sam did a good job with those sort of things.
