The first post is always a little scary. You may have been writing for years but when a new title is suddenly attached to your post it seems slightly daunting. Suddenly you have forgotten how to spell the word “vision” and when you see it on the page you have a sneaking suspicion it’s never looked like that in the past no matter what spell check tells you. And vision is the word you desperately want to use. After all you want to start off with some fanfare, set the tone for what your tenure will be like, and let everyone know you have a plan.
Of course part of that fear is the legacy you are entrusted with. In the case of Revenews the contributions of Wayne Porter, Jim Kukral, and Sam Harrelson have not only laid a solid foundation but left a permanent imprint on what readers expect to encounter when it comes to these pages. Combine that with the contributions of long-time writers like Carsten Cumbrowski, Brad Waller, David Lewis and you start to realize how rich the content and discussion has been. It’s not something you want to screw up which is why that first post is a little scary.
My advice is to simply jump in.
So here goes.
In the argument I hear marketers have all the time concerning whether content is truly king, I land firmly on the side of content. To me, providing rich content and facilitating vibrant discussion is the lifeblood of any successful publication. My goals are twofold. Eliminate posts that are purely self promotional in nature or are simply a regurgitation of other articles sans additional insights. At the same time I want to see an expansion of in-depth articles that facilitate discussion and more interview style stories that bring into focus those who are breaking new ground in our industry.
To our readers I hope the improvements you will see at Revenews will enchance your enjoyment of the articles and insights we provide. I look forward to your feedback on our site in general and our articles in particular. That feedback provides the guidance we need to deliver the relevant content you seek. Thank you for being part of our community.
Congratulations of the promotion! I look forward to seeing how your leadership prospers.
Hi Angel,
I’m interested in doing some advertising on your site, however the contact listed under advertising (Sam) isn’t the person to go to any longer.
Could you email me with the contact information.
Thanks,
eric
Hi Eric,
Sent you a direct email. Sam thank you for forwarding the message.
Angel
Congratulations again, Angel! I think you’re be an excellent leader for ReveNews and I look forward to the Angel Era.
Hi Angel,
I am all for it. “In-Depth” means longer right?
I have not seen much self promotional stuff for the sake of self promotion in a long time. Writing about what we do and thus know is a given, including references to relevant projects, if they serve the purpose to illustrate or supplement the subject matter or to reinforce the credibility of the author (You can not assume that every reader knows all the bloggers of ReveNews.com to avoid the question “Who are you?”
)
I am not much of a news blogger myself, but I think that it is kind of important to cover that aspect as well. Big news are a natural seed for discussions and debates, but some news simply trigger a silent acknowledgement and nothing more.
Sam did a good job with those sort of things.
Important would be of course consistency like a Shawn Collins or Linda Buquet or it should not be done at all. This is of course an option as well, but it would make the “News” portion after “Reve” in the name look a bit misplaced.
Cheers!
Carsten
p.s. Angel, I have full confidence that you are able to do a good job here, even if you would be as nervous as a groom the night before being wed :).
“I have not seen much self promotional stuff for the sake of self promotion in a long time.”
I’ve seen some stuff over the years. Would it be like the three links you dropped to your blog in your first post in the new era?
Congratulations Angel….I’ll be looking forward to whats in store for the future of ReveNews.
