Building a Business at Affiliate Summit
If you have looked into Affiliate Summit at all, you have probably heard a lot of people talking about how they grew their businesses thanks to the conference. Without a doubt it helped me grow mine in many ways. But have you ever wondered if you could actually build a business out of attending Affiliate Summit? My story just might inspire you!
It Began With a Mastermind Group
Attending Affiliate Summit West in 2011, I noticed that one of the things I enjoyed most was brainstorming with other affiliates over lunch, drinks, and sessions. I came away with ideas plus got help with problems. All of it was done in the spirit of sharing resources and helping each other. If I could have that twice a year, why not every week?
To make a long story short, I ended up starting a Mastermind Group with Todd Farmer and Eric Nagel. We knew each other only from Affiliate Summit and really not all that well. But we got along and each brought different skills to the table. We began meeting every Friday and helping each other with pretty much everything from SEO to WordPress Plugins.
Teaching Others How to Mastermind
After people starting hearing about the success of our group, they either 1) wanted to join our group, or 2) wanted to know how to start their own group. The three of us decided that it would be fun to put together a panel on Mastermind Groups and how they can be used in Affiliate Marketing. We put together a presentation that really showed our personalities plus how we work together and gave it at Affiliate Summit West 2012.
We received terrific feedback both during the presentation and for months afterward. In fact, we’ve even heard back from others who attended or watched the video that they have formed their own Mastermind Groups that are meeting to this day. But it was not just others who benefited from the presentation. We found that we gained something as well as well in an unexpected way.
An interesting and pivotal thing happened between putting together the presentation and actually giving it. We discovered that we liked working on a joint project in addition to helping each other with our own projects. In fact, someone even asked during our presentation whether we had or would actually work together. The seeds were planted.
Launching and Maintaining the New Business
Between the time of our presentation at Affiliate Summit West and the next time that we all saw each other in person at Affiliate Summit East, we launched the Wine Club Group. It’s the perfect combination of our skill sets plus interests plus business contacts.
The site became profitable in its first year and has continued to do even better in its second. The only time that the 3 of us see each other still is at Affiliate Summit. We meet with each other to strategize plus meet with merchants together. While we are there to grow our own businesses, we can also spend time working on the joint venture.
What Can You Do?
You may want to start a Mastermind group yourself out of people you meet from Affiliate Summit. You may want to even want to start your own joint venture. The one thing that I can tell you for certain is that there is plenty of opportunity for finding whatever or whoever you need to take the next steps. Just speak up. Ask around. Tell people what you are looking for. If all else fails, find me there and we’ll brainstorm together!
