My Strategy to Legitimize Online Gambling

Last week, was not a good week for former Betonsports.com CEO David Carruthers. The site is currently down.
Visitors to the site are greeted with the following message:

IN LIGHT OF COURT PAPERS FILED IN THE UNITED STATES, THE COMPANY HAS TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED THIS FACILITY PENDING ITS ABILITY TO ASSESS ITS FULL POSITION. DURING THIS PERIOD NO FINANCIAL OR WAGERING TRANSACTIONS CAN BE EXECUTED. FURTHER INFORMATION WILL BE POSTED ONCE THE COMPANY IS IN A POSITION TO DO SO.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that the site is experiencing a traffic spike. However, with the site being out of order…all that traffic is going to waste. So that’s the badder news. My guess is that a ton of traffic is coming from customers who’d love to get their money back.

If I were in the online gambling industry and wanted to get people on my good side, I’d team up with a charity organization. We’d strike a deal where a percentage of all gambling revenue generated by the site PLUS a portion of customer earnings would go a non-profit cause.

Taking this a step further; imagine if a site like Upromise partnered with several gambling sites. It would be called Ugamble. There are always these news stories about people squandering away their children’s college funds on gambling. However, with Ugamble, a portion of the money being blown away would go RIGHT back in the college fund. Almost like the credit cards offering a 1% cash back on all purchases. And yes; I am hereby acknowledge to being a twisted marketing guru.

I… may or may not have a client who… may or may not be adopting this model. A portion of the rake of each game… may or may not go to the charity of the player's selection.

Its a great idea, and really throws the fundamentalist Right a curve-ball. Their argument has always been that online gambling is a scourge on the US, that is provides no jobs, tax income, or other benefits. Your point, Shmuly, is a great one– what if online gambling did offer a benefit to the US? Smart minds, my friend.
