What Makes an Affiliate Program Successful?
In school you hear about the four P’s of marketing a lot. (Product, Price, Promotion, and Place). I think when it comes to building and marketing a good affiliate program you can substitute the Place, for People. Any company can setup an affiliate program and put it on auto-pilot and hope that great affiliates will start promoting your product, but if you really want to build a sustainable business model around affiliate marketing you need the right affiliate manager.
I have seen many great affiliate programs fall to pieces with the departure of a strong affiliate manager. On the flip side, I have worked with affiliate managers that you know have a passion for their company and their products and want to work with you to figure out how to create a win-win relationship. These are the affiliate managers than can explode a program and make affiliates / publishers want to spend time on their programs. They understand the affiliate industry as well as their own and go out of their way to help to build relationships.
Before I meet Melissa Salas, the affiliate manager for Buy.com, at Affiliate Summit in Las Vegas, I had seen the ads in Revenue Magazine with the Picture where Melissa is in focus and the rest of the affiliate team is out of focus, and thought that perhaps Buy.com was just trying to put a pretty face on their program. But after meeting her, exchanging some emails, and listening to her latest pod cast interview on Webmaster Radio’s Affiliate Marketing Today Podcast I have completely changed my mind.

$25 for a mobile phone activation?!?!? How many can I buy at that price given the real market is substantially higher.
