Google Bowling - Your Site Might be Bowled Off Google Next!

October 28th, 2005 by Adam Viener

Google Bowling is a new term you should be aware of. Google has been trying to crack down on search engine spam for some time. Their latest algorithms can penalize sites for buying “run of site links” (ads / links that appear on every page of a website in order to drive thousands of inbound links). Sites using this technique have recently found their sites disappearing from Google.

Google Bowling Ball. Google BowllingSome people have looked at this phenomenon and decided that if they go out and purchase these types of links to their competitor’s sites, then their sites will disappear from the index, thereby boosting their own rankings. This is “Google Bowling“. If you find yourself gone from Google, you may just have been Google Bowled by one of your competitors.

The scary part is that Google has always said that you don’t need to worry about who links to you. This is no longer the case. Worse, sites have little or no control over who links to you.

Question: Blogs often use templates that are repeated on every page (example, the links section of this site). If all of the sudden I get up to thousands of pages will Google look at this and say the sites I am linking to are “run of site” text links and knock them off? This could be a problem.

I just read the thread at SEO Chat and their experiment was inconclusive. I would think instead of penalizing the site they would just discount the links, like they do with Yahoo Profile links.

That sounds like a more reasonable approach…

Yes there is now even a Black Hat SEO book available which says it can teach you googlebowling - as well as other ways to give a website negative SEO. If sites are being penalised then im sure googlebowling is possible because how can google tell if its the site owner or a black hat seo doing the offsite activity which can penalise the site.. ???
